Phnom Penh [Cambodia], April 8: Officials and conservationists in Cambodia on Friday called on people to stop trading and consuming bushmeat, saying that these activities are jeopardizing the kingdom's wildlife and biodiversity.
Ministry of Environment's Secretary of State NethPheaktra said more active participation from all stakeholders in strengthening the law is needed, encouraging local actors and communities to conserve wildlife for ecotourism development.
"The Ministry of Environment calls on all people to stop selling, buying and consuming wild meat as these activities are destroying Cambodia's wildlife and biodiversity of global significance," he said during the launch of the Zero-Snaring Campaign phase-2 in northwesternPursat province.
John Willis, country director of Wildlife Alliance, said a hunter laying a snare might get a short-term benefit for himself but everybody else in the community loses.
