An account matching a suspect in a US leak of classified documents leaked intelligence to a larger chat group just days after Russia began its military operation in Ukraine.
The New York Times on April 21 published an investigation that the suspect in the leak of classified documents in the US, Jack Teixeira, may have committed this act much earlier than previously reported, and shared it with a group of people. chat is bigger.
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on April 13 arrested Jack Teixeira (21 years old), a member of an air intelligence unit of the National Guard in Massachusetts on suspicion of being behind the leak of classified military documents. caused quite a stir recently.
Teixeira is an information technology specialist at an air force base in Massachusetts and has authority to access classified information. This young man is accused of leaking classified documents to a chat group with about 50 members called Thug Shaker Central on the social network Discord, a popular platform among gamers.
However, according to an investigation by The New York Times , an account matching Jack Teixeira's information posted confidential information and documents to another Discord chat group with about 600 members. This information is said to have never been discovered and it is not clear whether the US investigating agency is aware of this chat group or not. According to The New York Times , the documents were shared to the group less than 48 hours after Russia launched its military operation in Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
Documents posted to this group contain information on Russian and Ukrainian casualties, activities of Russian intelligence agencies, updates on aid to Ukraine. The account posted said that the documents were obtained from the US National Security Agency (NSA), Central Intelligence Agency ( CIA ) and other intelligence agencies.
Specifically, in a post, this person revealed to have seen a Pentagon report that said that one-third of Russian forces are being used for operations in Ukraine. On March 27, 2022, this person shared classified information obtained from the NSA website about Russia's preparation to withdraw from Kyiv. Indeed, two days later, Russian officials announced their withdrawal from the Ukrainian capital area.
In some posts, this person also claimed to have access to intelligence from US partners, specifically GCHQ - Britain's intelligence, security and cyber affairs agency.
The confidential information that this account continued to share on the chat group with 600 members until a month ago.
This new investigation raises questions about why the US authorities did not detect the leaks early, especially when hundreds of people could see these posts. The New York Times learned about this group chat through a Discord user. Unlike the Thug Shaker Central group, the chat group with 600 members is public on a YouTube channel and can be easily accessed in a split second.
Lawyers for Jack Teixeira and officials from the FBI, US Justice Department, and NSA declined to comment on the new information.
