Pyongyang [North Korea], May 27: The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) believes that US President Donald Trump's Golden Dome missile defense system project is a preparation for nuclear war in space.
The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on May 27 quoted a statement from the Institute for American Studies under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea criticizing US President Donald Trump 's plan to build the Golden Dome missile defense system as "a very dangerous threatening initiative".
According to the North Korean statement, the Golden Dome plan "is a typical product of 'America First', demonstrating self-righteousness, arrogance, arbitrary and domineering actions, and is a scenario of nuclear war in space."
The goal of Golden Dome is to utilize a network of hundreds of satellites orbiting the Earth, equipped with sophisticated sensors and interceptors, to destroy enemy missiles shortly after they are launched from countries such as China, Iran, North Korea or Russia, according to Reuters.
China said last week it was "extremely concerned" and called on Washington to abandon development of the project.
US President Donald Trump said on May 20 that he had chosen a design for the Golden Dome missile defense system and had appointed a head for the ambitious $175 billion program.
The White House chief wants the defense system to be operational before his term ends in early 2029, and has appointed General Michael Guetlein, deputy commander for operations of the US Space Force, to lead the Golden Dome project.
Golden Arches is Mr Trump 's ambitious military initiative , but it has also raised questions about its development time and cost.
Technically, although inspired by Israel, the US is about 430 times larger than Israel, and Israel's Iron Dome is designed to intercept short-range missiles. Therefore, the intention of building a shield to counter modern missiles such as ICBMs and covering the entire US would be a difficult task.
