Hanoi [Vietnam], May 4: After two decades pursuing art, Hua Wei Wen has gradually defined his professional approach. Currently, Hua Wei Wen has a calmer and more discerning mindset in his choices. The actor prioritizes projects with depth and where he can truly "live" with the character.
Following his impressive film roles, Hua Vi Van returns to the small screen after nearly 10 years with the television series "Dedication" (directed by Tran Ka My), produced by the People's Police Film Studio . The series will air at 9 PM every Sunday on VTV3, starting May 3rd.
In the film directed by Tran Ka My, Hua Vi Van plays the role of intelligence officer Nguyen Thanh (codename P1). Set in the turbulent Indochina of the 1960s, the character receives a secret order to infiltrate enemy ranks in Laos. Not only does he face the harsh challenges of his mission, but Nguyen Thanh also has to fulfill his responsibilities to his family, creating internal conflict between duty and personal feelings. Hua Vi Van's portrayal is based on the image of Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Thieu Gioc, who was awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces in 2024.
Hứa Vĩ Văn felt pressured playing the role of a real-life spy.
Similar to the original character, Nguyen Thanh in "The Dedication" is portrayed as someone fluent in multiple languages, with dialogue spanning Vietnamese, English, French, and Lao. While English is an existing advantage, and French was familiar to Hua Vi Van through previous projects, Lao presented a completely new challenge. The actor admitted that memorizing lines and delivering them naturally in this language was not easy, requiring considerable time and concentration during preparation.
To gather more material for the role, Hua Wei Wen and his team visited the family of Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Thieu Gioc, directly listening to, observing, and learning about the personality and daily habits of the real-life figure. From these real-life experiences, the actor accumulated many details to build the character of Nguyen Thanh more authentically.
"What moved me wasn't the role itself, but the opportunities to interact with his family. To this day, their lives remain simple and quiet. He was a man who sacrificed almost his entire life for the country but didn't prioritize personal gain. In fact, there are things that even his family only truly understood about him later. That helped me empathize more with his choices, and to some extent understand the work of an intelligence agent," he confided.
Hứa Vĩ Văn hopes that the family of Lieutenant Colonel Nguyễn Thiệu Giốc can somehow "reconnect" with his image through the character Nguyễn Thanh on the small screen. The actor believes that the contributions of the real-life figure were immense. Therefore, he hopes that a part of his life will be recreated and honored appropriately, thereby helping not only the family but also the audience nationwide to better understand the silent sacrifices of the Vietnamese intelligence force.
