Damascus [Syria], September 2: At least five people were killed in an explosion in the town of Binnish in Syria's north-western Idlib countryside, the Idlib Health Directorate and a monitor group said on Tuesday.
Rami Abdel Rahman, the head of the British-based syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told dpa the blasts also wounded at least five other people. He said that successive explosions rocked the town, causing panic among residents and prompting civil defence teams and security personnel to rush to the scene.
According to initial reports, a vehicle loaded with ammunition exploded near an arms depot.
The war monitor which has been documenting violence in Syria since 2011, said several military personnel were among those injured in the blasts.
Residents reported seeing rockets and other ammunition exploding continuously after the initial blast, which prompted the local authorities to warn people to stay away from the area because of the risk of further explosions, flying ammunition and shrapnel.
Several ammunition and weapons depots have exploded in the provinces of Idlib and Aleppo since the fall of the former syrian rule of Bashar al-Assad in 2024, with many of the facilities reportedly having been used by armed factions.
