Phnom Penh (Cambodia), June 29: Cambodia reported new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday after having recorded zero cases for 52 consecutive days, Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen said Tuesday night.
In a special audio message to the nation, Hun Sen said some patients were confirmed positive for the COVID-19 virus by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests, and others by rapid antigen tests.
He said that the infected people are both locals and inbound travelers.
"I would like to announce that the COVID-19 has attacked our country again," he said. Although the infected people are still a few and the patients have mild symptoms, he urged all people to be vigilant and to strictly follow health measures.
The prime minister warned that the country would return to a "very bad" situation if thorough measures had not been taken, urging the eligible people to receive COVID-19 vaccines or booster doses when their turns come.
Thanks to massive vaccinations, Cambodia has resumed all socioeconomic activities and reopened its borders to fully vaccinated travelers without quarantine since November last year.
According to the health ministry, the Southeast Asian nation has so far administered COVID-19 vaccines to nearly 15.1 million people, or 94.3 percent of its 16 million population.
